REGISTRATION

Enter Dalkeith Campus via the main entrance. After parking in the main car park please enter the main building via the front door, take a right on entering reception. Please do not bring your bike into the building.  If you have come by car, leave it in your car until you have registered or, take it to the rear of the building where the bike transition area is set up.  It can be moved to your allocated spot once you know your race number.  The transition area will be marshalled before and throughout the race.  At registration you will be asked your name and given a goodie bag which will include your race number and hat. Your number will also be marked on your arm and leg.

RACE BRIEF

A race brief will be held at pool side at 11am.  If you are swimming in the first heat you should be changed ready to swim as there may not be enough time to get changed after the the brief and before the race starts at 11.30am.

The race brief will not go through the race in great detail but will remind you of some of the race rules and provide information for your own safety.  If you have any questions regarding the points mentioned or any aspect of the race please do not hesitate to ask.

CHANGING ROOMS

There are dry and wet changing rooms available. The pool should be entered via the wet changing room. There are some lockers available within the wet changing room however not enough for all competitors. If you have family or friends with you that can look after your belongings that would be preferable.

SPECTATORS

There is a seating area at the side of the pool where family and friends can watch you do your swim. Spectators are also welcome around transition and the finish line however they should not enter the transition area and should ensure they keep the marked routes clear and do not obstruct any of the competitors.

START

The start line will be at pool side. The first heat for the swim is due to go off at 11:30am, with the second and third heats starting after the last swimmer from each heat exits for transition.

SWIM

The pool is a 25m six lane pool.

There will be three heats and you will be allocated a heat based on the swim time you put on your race entry. Within each lane the order of starting will be on the basis of the coloured swim cap you are given when you register. You start when your colour is called.

There will be time keepers and lane counters at the end of each lane and they will do their best to indicate to you when you have two lengths to go however it is your responsibility to count your lengths, 400 metres is 16 lengths.
The exit to transition is via the door at the end of the pool. There will be a short run to the transition area - the route will be marked and marshalled. If you wish to leave shoes at the pool exit these must not block the entrance and you should ensure when putting them on that you do not get in the way of anyone leaving the pool after you.

TRANSITION

The transition area will be set up in a car park at the rear of the school and will consist of scaffolding poles numbered at set intervals. You should ensure that you rack your bike at the number which corresponds to your race number. You can leave your cycling helmet, shoes etc. next to your bike however you should ensure that they do not get in the way of any other competitor.

At the end of the swim you will enter the transition area through a marked entrance. There will be a one way system operating within the transition area and you must ensure that you adhere to this. Before unracking your bike you must have your cycle helmet on and fastened. Similarly when you re-enter transition on completion of the cycle do not remove or unfasten your helmet until you have racked your bike.

Cyclists must have a helmet that complies with recognised standards (ANSI or BSI).

You must not mount your bike whilst within the transition area.

To leave transition follow the one way system and head to the exit marked ‘bike out’. On completion of the cycle you will re-enter transition at ‘bike in’ and again follow the one way system.
Once your bike is racked you can head out on the run. Once again follow the one way system and leave the transition are through the ‘run out’ exit.

CYCLE ROUTE

On leaving transition you will head out of the school campus taking a left at the traffic lights. The cycle is a circular route as illustrated in red below. The first part of the route is uphill; the route has left turns throughout and passes through the village of Whitecraigs where there are traffic calming measures. The road will be open to traffic and the competitors must obey the rules of the road unless instructed otherwise by the police.

Re-enter the school campus the same way that you left and head back towards the transition area. Dismount your bike before entering the transition area.

DRAFTING

The event is run under the rules of triathlonscotland and therefore the cycle is draft free; this means that cyclists cannot follow closely behind any other competitors or vehicles. When you come up behind another cyclist you must pass that competitor within 30 seconds or drop back seven metres. Any competitor found drafting will have a time penalty added to their race time.

RUN ROUTE

Leave transition via the ‘run out’ exit. A water station will be set up close to transition near the run exit.

The run route is a 5k out and back along the railway path which runs adjacent to the school. It will be clearly marked and there will be marshals manning any junctions and also at the turnaround point. There will be notices up advising the public that there is a race going on however the path will not be closed for the race so you should be aware that there could be pedestrians about.
You should keep to your right on the way out and back.

The finish line will be clearly marked at the end of the run. Please ensure your number is clearly visible and be ready to shout it out if asked. Once you have crossed the line you will be placed in a finish funnel and marshalled out of the area. Please follow the instructions of the finish line marshals. At the end of the race, once you have your breath back, we would appreciate if you could remove your bike from the transition area as soon as possible in order that the racking can be dismantled.  For security purposes you may be asked to show your race number before removing your bike.

Many people train wearing music players; during races however music players are not allowed. There are many health and safety reasons for this as well as the outside advantage which music gives is unfair. You will be asked to remove the earphones so please do not waste your time putting on a music player. Anyone found using one is risking disqualification.

PRIZE GIVING

Prize giving will start as soon as possible after the last competitor has crossed the finish line. It will take place in the school dining area the same place as registration. Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 1st local.

There will also be some spot prizes so don’t rush off as they will only be given out to people who are there to collect them.

There will be a selection of food available at the end of the race for competitors.
